Workshop to show the ophthalmological and optometric management of keratoconus.

ELZA consultant surgeon, Dion Paridaens MD, PhD, was honoured to present the Gold Medal lecture at the Saudi Ophthalmology 2020 Virtual meeting on the topic of non-infectious orbital inflammation.

On August 6th, 2020, Prof. Farhad Hafezi was honored to be invited by His Royal Highness, Prince Abdulaziz Bin Ahmed, of the Saudi Royal Family, to present the Shield Lecture at the Saudi Ophthalmology 2020 virtual meeting.

With the number of COVID-19 cases rising again in Switzerland, it is worth restating the measures ELZA is taking to combat COVID-19 and protect everyone in the clinic – patients and staff alike – from the threat this virus poses.

ELZA at the WOC 2020 Virtual Meeting: Dion Paridaens MD, PhD, Chief Executive of the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS) and oculoplastic & orbital surgeon at the ELZA Institute, Zurich took part in WOC 2020 Virtual Meeting in his role as a Subspecialty Coordinator for Orbital, Oculoplastic, and Lacrimal Diseases.

Corneal Cross-Linking strengthens and sterilizes the cornea.. Here is a simple proposal: perform CXL at the slit lamp (in the doctor’s office), not the OR.

Even in extreme cases of keratoconus, corneas with scars or corneas after transplantation, where glasses fail, customized scleral lenses may lead to useful vision.

A transPRK of more than 100 microns on without the use of any mitomycin and in the absence of clinically relevant haze is possible in middle European settings. Now let’s put this into perspective. We have now performed in Switzerland, on Swiss patients, transPRK cases up to minus 12 D in a 6.5 millimeter zone. And that’s more than 140 microns of ablation without mitomycin.

Dr. Emilio Torres-Netto’s moderated poster presentation “Stromal bed smoothness after excimer laser surface ablation as a key element for the expression of inflammatory genes”, which won the Best Poster Prize at Winter ESCRS, in the Refractive Surgery Section.

“CXL for ultra-thin corneas: the sub400 protocol” shows a revolutionary new protocol to treat ultra-thin keratoconic corneas down to 215 µm thickness.
